Check Your Phone Line

Like a simple test to see how good or bad your phone line is? One way to do this is to use HyperTerminal (Found in Win95 or Win 98) to dial to 3 Com's line test number in Illinois (1-847-262-6000). Type line and test at the prompts and your first and last name when asked. The test begins and gives you one of the following messages.

You are currently connected at 56K and no further testing is required. This means you have connected with a 56K modem and all is well.

This connection supports 56K technology. This means you could connect at 56K if you wanted to and therefore your phone line is fine. You probably did not connect at 56K because you do not have a 56K modem.

56K is not currently possible on this connection, or it is likely to be highly impaired. This means there could be a problem with your modem, phone lines in your house or with your phone company line. Remember this 56K pass/fail test doesn't evaluate line performance at slower speeds, and it tests your line performance, not your modem's performance.
